Author, Producer, Director, Actor, Minister and Business Woman Jackie Boatwright, Brings Candid Entertainment to the Stage. The play is based on the book "Shells with No Substance"
Synopsis of the Play:
Eight women gather for their annual friendship dinner party. Each of the women are caught in their own idealistic fallacies that later evolve into the women pointing fingers to identify the “real shell”. The party is hosted by Lisa, in a house where every piece of furniture is for decorative purposes only, which keeps the ladies on their feet throughout the night as she reminds everyone of the cost of each piece. Ayo, who is in charge of the food for the evening, is having a serious identity crisis in the midst of a lot of marital issues.
We all have that one friend that is too saved; this is Sharon. Sharon just found Jesus last year and arrives at the dinner party with her bible and her holy water in her quest to convert the women! Brenda, who is dressed for her trip to the club after the party, clearly refuses to shop in department stores that carry her size, and gets upset that no one likes her dress! Her partner in crime, Gail, takes pride in being a cougar, and throughout the night brags about her love for the younger man, and she is not going older than 25.
Trinia is all about that paper; degrees that is. Ever since she got her doctorate she has entered another class, and very few are in it, and the ladies find out, her husband is one of those who has lost out. Denise arrives with a brown paper bag; she is defined by her light skin and long hair, she constantly taunts Trinia about her darker skin! And finally there is Jackie, the minister of the friendship group who just wants to enjoy the evening and relax but keeps being pulled into her pastoral role as she tries desperately to break up the bickering and to keep her friends together. In this com-drama, the motley crew all show their “SHELLS” and by the end of the night, the actions of the uninvited neighbor and her dog, lead to unwanted truths about the women being revealed; and that is just the beginning!
The night continues with the unexpected, when unbeknownst to the ladies, their husbands arrive with efforts of sharing their versions of truth. No Shells is a stage play that is artistically refreshing, inspirationally moving and laugh out loud entertaining.
